Capacity building is an important part of the work that we do at Eckova. We place a great deal of importance on education and training, and provide frequent opportunities for all those who work with us. We are acutely aware, as are many of our peers, about the growing need for good skilled people in the non fiction film domain.
In the area of education and training we conduct regular workshops for our employees and collaborators. Through our internship program we create opportunities for students to spend one or two semesters and get practical training and real world experience working on live projects. It is important to us to provide a flavor of how exciting and gratifying documentary filmmaking can be, providing countless ways of telling stories, changing perceptions, providing information, while remaining engaging and entertaining, and above all making a difference.
We have an ongoing program with Karachi University. Our premises have been designated the town campus for the KU Film School and many of the classes for the first batch in this program are conducted at our location. The participating students will produce 4 films by the end of the semester which will be screened later in the year. Our CEO is part of the faculty as well as a part of the steering committee for building the film school.
We recently conducted a workshop with the British High Commission at our premises in which 12 young students in 4 groups from various universities around Karachi were trained by a team from the UK in the production of documentaries. No doubt the experience will teach the students a lot about filmmaking, but a bigger gain will be the change within them as they explore relevant and pressing issues and realize the power of media as an agent of change. The films produced at the end of the workshop will be screened at the London Independent Documentary Festival. The four directors from the groups are being flown to London to talk about their experience.
We are always keen to work with educational institutions, and other organizations interested in building capacity in media from a journalistic and social context. Our fertile learning environment provides just the right setting for hungry minds. Our able and trained staff and crew are always available to provide help and guidance. We have an abundance and diversity of production and post production equipment which we often schedule for use in workshops and training sessions. |
